I am the co-founder and a co-chair of MultiPlay, an academic network which takes a multidisciplinary approach to video game studies. MultiPlay has around 250 members. The network supports collaboration, and works to bring new opportunities to academics interested in game studies from hosting conferences to publishing. MultiPlay has secured funding from multiple universities to support academics with conferences and attending events. Additionally, MultiPlay hosts a regular reading group and has a YouTube channel for all our conference papers as well as the podcast, Game Academy.
MultiPlay Committee
I co-chair the MultiPlay committee which is focused upon supporting and growing the membership, hosting events and delivering new opportunities for scholars. MultiPlay has hosted a myriad of conferences on the themes of sex and romance in video games, Gothic games, queer games studies, and space and place in video games. Our very first conference in January 2022 was organised before the full committee was established and we had over 300 people register for our event.
MultiPlay Editorial Board
I co-chair the MultiPlay Editorial Board which I established in September 2022. The editorial board includes game studies scholars from a multitude of disciplines. At the time of writing, MultiPlay is expected to launch a special edition journal on The Last of Us in the summer of 2023 in partnership with The Journal of Geek Studies, a queer studies book and a Gothic games studies book in 2023.
Game Academy
Additionally, I have used my experience and qualifications in journalism to establish a podcast with Adam Jerrett. Game Academy is the official podcast of MultiPlay and already has a strong audience. Each month, the podcast covers the news from video game studies, promotes opportunities for academics, interviews rising scholars and hosts lively discussions on games studies topics.
